The Legends of Friendswood Organization is hosting “Thanks for Giving”a Community Shower for the innovative new Friendswood Independent School District’s Special Education Vocational and Daily Living Skills Transition Center. Wednesday, November 13, 2013, 5:00 to 8:00 pm, at the FISD Annex Training Center, 402 Laurel Drive.

Tours of the Transition Center next door will be conducted throughout the event. All are welcome to attend the event, and no RSVP is required. We are excited for local businesses to see what marketable skills these students are able to provide to our community!

The Legends of Friendswood organization has donated $15,000 to FISD from funds raised at their 2013 annual golf tournament. This funding has helped to complete the remodeling of one of the Friendswood ISD Annex buildings to be transformed into a new innovative Vocational and Daily Living Skills Transition Center for Special Education students in the 18 to 22 year old age range who have previously been in classrooms at the High School for 8 years. These students now have the opportunity to participate in graduation with their peers after their 4th year at the high school, and begin attending the Transition Center just as their peers are moving on to further studies or vocational activities. Special Education students from the JH and FHS also utilize the Transition Center to learn various skills.
In addition to their cash funding commitment, Legends of Friendswood is hosting a “Community Shower” on November 13, to help fulfill the needs of small appliances, living and bedroom furnishings and gardening tools to be used at the Transition Center.
The new center has 2 separate pre-vocational skills labs, a fully functional residential-style kitchen with handicap accessibility, living room, bedroom, and laundry room for training in personal housekeeping and daily living skills, an exercise/adaptive PE room/gym, and additional space for training of needed skills. A local Eagle Scout has also set up a container garden and will be working with these students teaching gardening skills.
